... what can go wrong?!?

So i started this morning with a good feeling about my day. Prepare the migration of our file server in SB to a new server with more space.
so i thought to myself:

"At 5pm copy the 250+ GB to the new server and around midnight are you done."

No i'am not disillusioned, no definitely not! Just very optimistic.

As usual i forgot in my equation the undefined variable DU*.
Since 5pm i try now to copy the data from one computer to another. Usually not a big deal, just 5 little steps:

1. Download Microsoft File Server migration tool.
2. Install FSM on new server.
3. Create new migration Profile.
4. Add server and shares you want to migrate to your new server.
5. Hit start and wait.

So much to the theory. Now the praxis!
Since i migrated that server before with the FSM. It or I screwed up the shares. Which can't be read by the FSM anymore. I have no other alternative then back to the roots, or as Hywell would say -

back in the old days ...

- write a robocopy script. Write a vbscript to create user shares*1. Write a vbscript to set permissions*1.

And so far the theory, again.

Then you trip over small issues which make your DU a mess. Here a view things which can make you a instant killer!

Path structures with more the 255 characters (because folder names can't be shortened)
Files like: "Copy of Copy of Copy of Copy of Copy of XYZ.jpg"
XYZ.PST sizy 700MB, XYZ.BAK size 700MB, XYZ1.BAK size 700MB.

So here i'am 11:45pm another 50GB to go an no shares setup yet.

Nope i don't have a private life ... I have to wait till all security copy's of files are copied and then i don't have any time left.
